What is child safeguarding?

Child safeguarding refers to the responsibility of public authorities, institutions and organisations to make sure their staff, members, operations and programmes do no harm to children and do not expose children to any risks. It also requires that any concerns about the safety of a child or children are followed-up and reported to the appropriate authorities.

What is a child safeguarding and well-being policy?

A child safeguarding policy is a formal commitment by a public authority, institution or organisation to protect all children from harm, abuse, neglect, exploitation and any child rights’ violation. It sets out the approach to preventing harm and responding appropriately to concerns, based on the principles of the UNCRC and the best interests of the child. The policy includes clear roles, responsibilities, procedures, and accountability mechanisms to ensure that children’s rights to protection, safety, and participation are respected in every context where the public body, institution or organisation operates.

The Safe in Town e-learning programme builds on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, Council of Europe standards and European Union law.
